Advertiser-Funded Programming

In 2004 Kaelo Worldwide Media developed the Corporate Social Responsibility television series “Kaelo - Stories of Hope” and began working with three sponsors: Telkom Foundation, Pick n Pay and FNB. The 26-minute programme was broadcast for 26 weeks on SABC 2 and in 2007 the show moved into it’s third series.

“Kaelo – Stories of Hope” focuses on CSR stories and what corporates are doing for communities and individuals. Each programme, which is presented by Siphiwe Hlabangane, is made up of three sponsored stories and includes a CSR news segment and studio guests from the CSR world, who provide comment and engage in discussion on the relevant issues in the particular programme.

Further to our involvement in the CSR world, the KWM production unit is also very involved in Sanlam SA Fashion Week, which is a project that sits in the space between advertiser-funded programming and commissioned programming.

The backing comes from the sponsor (Sanlam), who facilitates the access to the product in the form of Fashion Week itself. KWM then takes care of all the production elements, including the shooting of the material, conducting the relevant interviews and editing the final product. The SABC have since stepped in to commission six 26-minute programmes, together with 10 three-minute “fillers”, that will also go out at various times on SABC 3.

The material in the programmes is made up of both the Winter and Summer Collections at SSAFW, as well as the DAC Workshops and a variety of fashion topics and talking points, such as “The Business of Fashion”.
