As an extension to the Flora sponsorship of the 2005 Comrades Marathon, we advised Flora to take their sponsorship to retail by creating a Comrades Experience at which a Flora stand was erected and professional chefs cooked up healthy meals with new Liquid Flora, showing consumers that healthy eating does not have to be boring and that healthy food can still taste great. Strong in-store branding linking the event to Flora was erected for the duration of the campaign.

This year marks the third annual Victoria Falls Marathon, a picturesque and challenging 42.2km route through Zimbabwe and across the world renowned Victoria Falls Zambezi Bridge. It is a world class long distance running spectacular, which offers athletes scenic views whilst they strive to complete the designated run. But all this would not be possible without naming rights & broadcast sponsor, Econet Wireless, brought on board by Kaelo Worldwide Media, a specialist media solutions company focusing on sponsorship consulting and activation, TV production, and corporate social responsibility communications.

As part of the sponsorship deal, Kaelo Worldwide Media has also negotiated to produce and broadcast the marathon on SuperSport while working closely with the Zimbabwean Tourism Authorities to promote the Victoria Falls area as an adventure and sporting destination. “This marathon is the only one of its kind and status in Zimbabwe,” says Debbie Harrison, Regional Head of Kaelo Worldwide Media. “Its association with one of the natural wonders of the world makes it a unique race to run. Econet Wireless was able recognize the benefit of being involved in this event and through its sponsorship will engage directly with its target market by creating a unique and memorable experience for all runners.”

Econet Wireless says, “As the country’s leading telecommunications company, we feel it is necessary to show the rest of Africa and the rest of the world how beautiful Zimbabwe is, and what the country has to offer in terms of sport. We are delighted to be involved in this event, especially as it is of great benefit to our community. Supporting our community is something we are deeply passionate about.”

Kaelo Worldwide Media has been involved in generating corporate sponsors for the Victoria Falls Marathon since it started in 2006 and has been at the forefront of securing other sponsors for this year’s marathon including African Sun Hotel Group the naming right sponsor to the Half Marathon, GoToVicFalls.com, the naming right sponsor to the 5km fun run, taking place on the same day, Medical Air Rescue Services (MARS) Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, Safari Par Excellence, and Zambezi Premium Light Lager, Wild Horizons, Wild Frontiers and the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe.

The Victoria Falls Marathon provides an opportunity for both local and international runners to increase their profiles amongst some of the best runners in the world.  The broadcast coverage will also help to  to promote the Victoria Falls area as an adventure and sporting destination and surrounding communities will benefit from the tourism generated by the event.

“With the broadcasting of the Victoria Falls Marathon on SuperSport, we have been able to highlight the importance and significance of road running in Africa to a large, diverse audience,” says Harrison. “It is safe to say that road running in Africa is a unique experience which will continue to increase in popularity with this type of exposure.”
